Ice on the copper line or the attic unit in July
Ice on an air conditioner in a Texas summer means the coil is running below freezing. The two usual causes are too little air across the coil and too little refrigerant in it, and both get worse the longer the system keeps running.
The line is answered 24/7. Visits depend on which contractors are working your ZIP code.
What to do right now
Turn the cooling off at the thermostat and set the fan to "on". The blower will move air across the coil and melt the ice in an hour or two. Running the compressor against a frozen coil risks damage, and the melt water is about to fill the drain pan in the attic, so check that the pan and drain are clear.
Why it happens
Airflow. A choked filter, a closed or blocked return, a failing blower motor or a collapsed duct means too little warm house air reaches the coil, so the coil keeps getting colder until moisture on it freezes.
Refrigerant. A system that is low on charge runs a colder, lower-pressure coil. Refrigerant is not used up, so a low charge means a leak. The leak does not close on its own, and each recharge without a repair is a short reprieve.
What a technician checks
Filter and blower first, because they are fastest to rule out. Then refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling once the coil has thawed, and a leak search if the charge is low. Systems installed before about 2010 may run on R-22, which has not been produced since 2020, so a leak on one of them is usually where the replacement conversation starts.
What to have ready when you call
- Where the ice is: the line at the outdoor unit, the attic unit, or both
- How long the system ran iced before you noticed
- Whether the filter was changed recently, and its size
- The install year and refrigerant from the outdoor data plate
- Your address, ZIP code and attic access
Common questions
It ran fine after thawing. Is it fixed? Usually not. If the cause was refrigerant or a weak blower, it will freeze again on the next long hot afternoon.
